Stadsleven: Coffee, beer and chocolate

Food is not only a basic necessity for people but also has an enormous influence on the city. Trendy coffee houses can revitalize a neighbourhood but can also be the cause of gentrification. The attention of local foods highlights the identy of the city. The way to the heart of the city is through its stomach.

This edition Stadsleven will have the following guests to discuss this subject: Jan Rath (prof. Urban Studies UvA), Kai van Hasselt (Urban Strategy Consultant Shinsekai Analysis), Keuken van het Ongewenste Dier, Oedipus Bier (Mannenliefde).

Stadsleven (Citylife) is the monthly talkshow of Tracy Metz, about living in cities and in Amsterdam in particular. Partners of Stadsleven are De Groene Amsterdammer, EYE and People's Place. The program is in Dutch.

The John Adams Institute presents Gary Shteyngart

Gary Shteyngart's parents were disappointed in their baby, who was sickly and asthmatic. His dad called him 'Snotty', his mom 'Failurchka' - hence the title of his new book, 'Little Failure'. He's back to talk about this, his first foray into non-fiction in the form of a memoir. He left Leningrad with his parents for the US at the age of seven. Only then did he started to learn English - and now teaches writing at Columbia University. The immigrant experience, both his parents' and his own, is a never-ending source for his satirical humor.

Gary Shteyngart is the author of the novels Super Sad True Love Story, Absurdistan, which was chosen as one of the ten best books of the year by the New York Times Book Review and Time magazine. His work has been translated into twenty-six languages and The New York Times regards him as 'one if his generation's most original and exhilirating writers'.

Julian Velard *moved to Paradiso*

Julian Velard *moved to Paradiso*

Julian Velard's engaging style of theatrical, piano-based pop has been colored richly by several stints in London, where he recorded his first two full-length albums, The Planeteer (2009) and Mr. Saturday Night (2011). On his upcoming release, 'If You Don't Like It, You Can Leave', he's bringing it all back to New York City, his birthplace and lifelong home. With a style The Sunday Times calls 'catchy but complicated; a surprisingly rare combination,' Velard turns the piano-pop tunesmith stereotype on its ear with a most refreshing twist: a biting 21st century wit in a stylish package - think Harry Connick, Jr.  with the panache of a Brooklyn hipster - recalling Stephen Sondheim or Randy Newman at the peak of their talents. Julian's versatility has also earned him regular appearances on NPR.

'If You Don't Like It, You Can Leave' finds Julian at his most inventive and deeply personal, with nine engaging originals about happiness and heartbreak across the five boroughs. Velard becomes the most captivating keymaster to the greatest city in the world. This album debuted on the Dutch Album Charts at #73 and he's also one of 3fm's favorite artists of this time.
