Grachtenfestival Amsterdam 2014: Remy van Kesteren ft. Atlas

As winner of the Grachtenfestival Prijs 2013, harpist Remy van Kesteren is serving as Artist in Residence for the Grachtenfestival Amsterdam 2014. That means he's been given carte blanche to plan three concerts. Wildly differing programs featuring three genres in diverse combinations. Van Kesteren and saxophonist Ties Mellema founded the kwintet Atlas, which played it first show at the Grachtenfestival Amsterdam's last Winterspecial. The two men prefer concerts with a distinct pop flavour and have surrounded themselves with adventurous musicians who dare to break the rules of classical music. Rob Dirksen on bass and contrabass, Ramon Lormans on percussion and Vincent Houdijk on drums and percussion. Don't expect your typical classical concert with neat rows of chairs or a program booklet. Playing their own compositions and arrangements, Atlas invites the audience to come along and explore the boundaries of music.

Young musicians who know how to rattle the cage of the established order. After the concert, a DJ will transform People's Place into a genuine club.

Stadsleven: Work is where the WiFi is

A meeting, a round of emails,  a quick talk with colleagues and then writing a project proposal. An ordinary day at the office. Working from a coffeehouse.

The city has become our office and we 'wifi hunting urban nomads".  If coffeehouses have become offices and offices are increasingly starting to resemble bars, what impact does this have on urban planning? Do the new flexible workplaces add value to the city?  And should project developers respond to the need of people to work from home? Be there Monday, August 25th,  for the hunt for the 'wifi hunting urban nomad'.

Stadsleven (Citylife) is the monthly talkshow of Tracy Metz, about living in cities and in Amsterdam in particular. Partners of Stadsleven are De Groene Amsterdammer, EYE and People’s Place. The program is in Dutch.

The John Adams Institute presents: B.J. Novak

With One More Thing, author, actor and comedian B.J. Novak brings you a hilarious collection of bizarre and short stories. Most people know him as the character Ryan from the television series The Office U.S., on which he was also one of the writers. With a background in stand-up comedy, Novak's stories are quick and funny, but they are also very clever. Reading the diary of the man who invented the calendar in its first year of use will make you laugh out loud and at the same time appreciate Novak's precision on turning a whacky idea into a believable, yet still comical, story. According to the Washington Post, Novak is 'a gifted observer of the human condition and a very funny writer capable of winning that rare thing: unselfconscious, insuppressible laughter.'

Turin Brakes

October 11 2014

Turin Brakes

Turin Brakes is a modern duo from London consisting of Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian. They had a UK top 5 hit with their song 'Painkiller (Summer Rain)' and are joined on stage by Rob Allum and Eddy Meyer, their live band. Since starting out in 1999, the band has sold around 1 million records internationally. They are currently signed to Cooking Vinyl.

Turin Brakes have often been compared to many of the new acoustic movements bands spawned in the late 1990's such as Elbow, Starsailor and the Norwegian band Kings of Convenience. On each record the Turin Brakes try to change their sound. While the first album features a lot of acoustic guitar, the second album featured more electric guitar and was in total a lot darker. Their third album, 'Jackinabox', can be seen as more of a combination been the first two. Their latest album was released on September 30th 2013.

Robin McKelle

October 12 2014

Robin McKelle

Robin McKelle is a vocalist who has straddled the line between classic rhythm & blues and traditional pop music, but her love of swing and big-band jazz has been even more pronounced. She was discovered in France through two swing jazz albums recorded with a big band: Introducing Robin McKelle (2006) and Modern Antique (2008). Both these albums happened almost by accident, but one thing lead to another and McKelle started touring all around the world with great success. The list of artists she has worked with since includes George Duke, Herbie Hancock, BeBe Winans, David Bowie, Carly Simon, Michael McDonald and Gregory Porter among others.

For her new album, 'Heart of Memphis', two years after her latest album Soul Flower, she immersed herself in the spirit of this magical city. With her deep voice and her earthy, frank, direct and gut-wrenching singing, McKelle embraces the legacy of those great artist from a city well-known for its tendency towards raw expression. Regarding her explosive live performances, Robin McKelle is influenced as much by the great male soul singers as by the divas of the 60's.

Otis Taylor

October 21 2014

Otis Taylor

Otis Taylor is an American blues musician. He's a multi-instrumentalist whose talents include the guitar, banjo, mandolin, harmonica and vocals.  With him, it's best to expect the unexpected.  While his music, an amalgamation of roots styles in their rawest form, discusses heavyweight issues like murder, homelessness, tyranny, and injustice, his personal style is lighthearted. Part of Taylor's appeal is his contrasting character traits. But it is precisely this element of surprise that makes him one of the most compelling artists to emerge in recent years. Guitar Player magazine writes, 'Otis Taylor is arguably the most relevant blues artist of our time.'  Taylor has released over 10 albums, was awarded a fellowship to the Sundance Film Composers Labaratory in 2001 and was nominated for two Handys  'Best Acoustic Artist' and 'Contemporary Blues Album' in 2003. This tour is for his latest album 'My World Is Gone'. Ticket info coming soon.

Julian Velard

November 18 2014

Julian Velard

Julian Velard's engaging style of theatrical, piano-based pop has been colored richly by several stints in London, where he recorded his first two full-length albums, The Planeteer (2009) and Mr. Saturday Night (2011). On his upcoming release, 'If You Don't Like It, You Can Leave', he's bringing it all back to New York City, his birthplace and lifelong home. With a style The Sunday Times calls 'catchy but complicated; a surprisingly rare combination,' Velard turns the piano-pop tunesmith stereotype on its ear with a most refreshing twist: a biting 21st century wit in a stylish package - think Harry Connick, Jr.  with the panache of a Brooklyn hipster - recalling Stephen Sondheim or Randy Newman at the peak of their talents. Julian's versatility has also earned him regular appearances on NPR.

'If You Don't Like It, You Can Leave' finds Julian at his most inventive and deeply personal, with nine engaging originals about happiness and heartbreak across the five boroughs. Velard becomes the most captivating keymaster to the greatest city in the world. This album debuted on the Dutch Album Charts at #73 and he's also one of 3fm's favorite artists of this time.
